Gerhard Richter is one of the foremost artists of his generation. Central to his work is a strong set of values which throughout his career he has expressed in extensive notes and writings, and in provocative and memorable public declarations in which he shows himself the master of the paradoxical statement. The original volume of Gerhard Richters writings was published in 1995. This new book makes available a wider and more up-to-date selection of Richters texts, from all periods of his career, many translated for the first time. The collection includes letters and interviews; public statements about specific exhibitions; private reflections from personal correspondence; answers to questions posed by critics; and excerpts from journals discussing the intentions, subjects, methods and sources of his works. Accompanied by biographical photographs from the artists personal collection, these texts form a brilliantly illuminating commentary on Richters art, as well as providing a thought-provoking discussion on the status of art in society today.

'Richter's views, sophisticated and free of dogma, are clearly represented. The translation reads smoothly' --The Art Book'Richter's writings reveal the trajectory of his career - and his spiritual ambivalence ... the primary source on the leading advocate of painting in our time' --The Art Newspaper

What a wonderfully compiled and in-depth book on Gerhard Richter. The amount of information you can glean from the man's thoughts and feelings, are conveyed through his letters, interviews and exhibitions. This is a must-have if you are researching such an iconic man such as Gerhard Richter.

Gerhardt Richter worked by developing photographs in East Germany. When he moved to the west he entered a world of commercialization and capitalism one where the production of things was less personalised and more automatic. The worker has no emotional attachment to the product he produced (simplified Marx). His move from east to west and his guilt about leaving effected his vision of production. He subconsciously viewed the west's production as wrong or faulty even if it was his guilty that determined this vision. So when the German artist of the 60's were influenced by the pop artist's of America and Richard Hamilton of the UK who's own vision was of a Utopian world of easy living through mass productions. Richter view of popular culture and pop art was one of distopia. German artist always have a desired to add psychology to the mix.So you can view Richter's paintings as a dissatisfaction of the west. The blurred paintings are poor renditions of reality (though technology well produced paintings). A commentary from his state of mind. When you read the writing of the artist the underlining vision is clear. This makes this book essential reading, though it is rather long.
