This book provides an excellent range of Philip Hawkins' paintings. It also gives a lively description of the author's life as a youngster - surrounded by the steam age. The paintings shown include modern trains such as the Docklands railway and authentic details from trains and stations in the 50s, developed through Hawkins' great attention to detail.

An outstanding book showing the very best railway paintings of Phillip Hawkins which bring back very fond memories of the glorious days of steam railways.

Bought for a friend as I already had a copy. Paintings are great and atmospheric in keeping with the era.

As a Brummie born in the late 1940s and a former train spotter this book is an excellent way of revisiting the days when steam ruled and you could name all those thundering steam trains that I saw on the Midlands railways and occasional trips wider afield. The paintings are superb and excellently reproduced. I would recommend this to all those interested in the stream trains and those looking for presents for those that are prepared to say I was once a train spotter.

I wanted to have some PD Hawkins pictures, could not afford to commission an oil painting from him (!) so thought this a good way to obtain a selection. Naturally the prints are less vivid and flatter than a real painting, but have given me pleasure nevertheless. The artist has a real eye for detail. I was more than usually pleased to read the printed pages which told the story of the artist from a young age. To my surprise he was active as a train spotter in the Birmingham area, where I grew up and also experienced the transition from steam to diesel. It is also a story of the growth and self training of the painter, which speaks of enterprise and progress. You will come to understand why he is an excellent illustrator and has all the detail, including the engine numbers, perfect. The book received was sent quickly and well-packed. Only the very slightest damage has been noticed, so to describe it as near new, is accurate. I suppose you might say that I was not entirely sure what I would be receiving, and this was a good way to find out at very modest cost. All in all I am very happy with this purchase, and I expect to refer to it in future years.
